Grants Made – Fiscal Year 2020-2021

The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation awarded $477,000 to nonprofits serving the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula.

  • $100,000 to hire Catchafire to continue offering professional assistance to local nonprofit Executive Directors and Staff providing services in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County and Gloucester County.
  • $100,000 to the Center for Child & Family Services for the Beacon ProgramThe mental health counseling provided by the program is available to the clients and/or employees of nonprofits providing services in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Gloucester County and York County.
  • $100,000 to Smart Beginnings of the Virginia Peninsula (SBVP) to improve school readiness for each child, in every community.  Its priorities are ensuring equitable access to high-quality early learning opportunities, healthy birth outcomes, and a community that uses data to drive results to improve conditions for young children.  The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation grant will enable SBVP to develop, strengthen and expand its priorities in order to fulfill its Mission and Vision.

The Foundation provided twenty $5,000 unrestricted grants to United Way Partner Nonprofits whose funding was decreased.  The nonprofits in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, York County and Gloucester County are:
